'Women in Construction' Series: Meet Riska Hardiyanti, Quantity Surveyor

Riska Hardiyanti joined Leighton Asia as a Quantity Surveyor in 2023, working at the Freeport Project in Indonesia. She contributes to the project's success using her knowledge of construction costs and contracting. Riska's responsibilities include preparing quantity surveying documents and cost estimates and assisting the commercial manager.

What inspired you to join the industry?

My father is a civil engineer with expertise in steel structural and is my Day-1 Supporter. He introduced construction drawing to me when I was a kid and supported me in engineering competitions.

Also, I met a professor at an award ceremony in the Netherlands who told me how engineers turn ideas into reality. He said that one day I would look back at a successfully completed project with pride about my work, my team and the skills built along the way.

Describe your experience at Leighton Asia.

‘Engaging’, ‘balanced’ and ‘collaborative’.

Leighton Asia encourages employees to maintain a healthy work life balance.

We have excellent teamwork at the Freeport project and Bekasi workshop in which our commercial, procurement, logistics, safety and engineering teams work together and leverage each other's professions to overcome complex challenges and deliver project successes.

Although we have to be away from our homes in a remote area of the highlands with extreme weather, we're an enthusiastic team, focused on best project outcomes.

What makes Leighton Asia different (from other construction companies/contractors in Indonesia)?

Leighton Asia has a strong commitment to safety and health. Programs like our One HSE Safety Culture and Strive for L▪I▪F▪E sustain the safety culture at all levels of the company.

We celebrate our safety achievements, and the projects with outstanding health and safety performance are recognised. This makes us feel valued and appreciated.

The inclusive and supportive working environment empowers us, especially females, to learn, share, and thrive. At project sites, we are provided with suitable facilities and clothing tailored for females. We have opportunities for professional and personal development. Leighton Asia’s Women in Construction and Engineering (WOICE) Group is a dedicated forum for us to connect, support and seek guidance.

What else do you think can be done to further drive equality and diversity in the construction industry in Indonesia?

I love this quote from Sheryl Sandberg: “In the future, there will be no female leaders. There will just be leaders.” Gender stereotypes limit personal and career development and should not be tolerated in any industry.

What is your favourite Leighton Asia project?

The first and only Freeport Project! I enjoy working with my supportive team, and it is a privilege to work in the highlands, 2,000 metres above sea level with beautiful scenery that fills me with wonder. I appreciate this wonderful nature created by God that boosts my mood, increases creativity and makes every day enjoyable.
