Our ‘Women in Construction’ Series features Salsabila Assegaff, a brilliant Graduate Engineer who joined Leighton Asia in 2021 and is now a Civil Engineer in our Indonesia team.
As a Civil Engineer, she develops the design intent drawings into shop drawings and ensures documents are properly approved.
Coming from our intensive Graduate Engineers program, Salsabila was able to gain knowledge on various aspects of a project, from commercial to planning, gaining experience on-site and in our offices.
What inspired you to join the industry?
I was inspired to take up civil engineering and eventually join the construction industry because of my father. He was a gas supplier for subcontractors involved in construction-related needs such as fabrication, rebar cutting, pipe testing etc.
While my father suggested for me to take up architecture, I found that I enjoy structure calculations and I am more comfortable working in the field.
Describe your experience at Leighton Asia.
‘Multicultural’, ‘fast-paced’, ‘innovative’. There are so many colleagues from various countries with various experiences. Progress is fast paced working with an industry leader. Leighton Asia provides innovative tools and techniques like BIM models to improve deliverables for projects.
What makes Leighton Asia different?
Leighton Asia is where I experienced the strict implementation of safety environment. I feel safe working in every project even though women are minority. Everyone is aware of their roles to implement safety protocols to foster a safe working environment for all of us.
What do you think about gender equality/diversity in the construction industry in Indonesia?
It’s getting better. I have seen lots of campaigns about women in the construction sector in general. Most of the construction companies now appreciate the unique contributions of female engineers. Especially here with Leighton Asia, we have WOICE campaign and annual celebration for International Women’s Day!
