The world’s largest underground railway station
The West Kowloon Terminus Station North is the largest civil contract awarded for the Hong Kong Section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link. Located in the heart of Kowloon, the terminus will serve as Hong Kong's international gateway to China.
Leighton Asia, with its partner, is one of the contractors constructing a 400,000 sqm underground terminus includes nine long-haul and six shuttle platforms, customs and immigration facilities, departure lounges, duty free and other retail outlets on four levels. Utilising a combination of conventional bottom-up and top-down construction methods, over 1.7 million cubic metres of earth will be excavated, 600,000 cubic metres of concrete placed and 150,000 tonnes of steel reinforcement will be used in the construction of the 30 metre-deep underground terminus.
A key element of the project is the dramatic roof structure above the station entrance made up of 9,000 tonnes of steel trusses.
Prefabricated components, weighing as much as 40 tonnes each, are used to construct the steel trusses, which span up to 45 metres. The scope of works also includes subway and footbridge connections, an underpass along Lin Cheung Road and architectural finishing works.
The project has applied extensive use of drone technology and 3D reality modelling for surveying to enhance operational efficiency and mitigate safety risks.
