Roborigger: a game changer in lifting safety

Leighton Asia has successfully implemented lifting technology at the Island Eastern Corridor (IEC) Boardwalk project, marking the first use of this innovative product on a construction project in Hong Kong.

Roborigger is a remote crane load control and orientation technology developed in Western Australia. Leighton Asia has been supporting Roborigger’s introduction into Hong Kong after recognising its success in other regions including Australia, Japan and Europe.

Using this technology, the team can perform lifts using remote controls, eliminating the need for workers to use taglines or stand near the loads until it is properly positioned and safe.

“We are always seeking opportunities to solve industry issues and reduce safety risks using innovation and technology,” said Robert Dickson, Leighton Asia Innovation Lead. “Roborigger’s Internet of Things and data collection features provide great insights to help us continually enhance our operations. This aligns with our vision of having smart, safe construction sites.”

To support the launch of Roborigger in Hong Kong, Derick Markwell, Founder of Roborigger visited the project to provide in-depth training to the riggers.

“Ultimately, this is about revolutionising safety in crane lifting worldwide and digitising crane operations,” said Derick. “Another key success factor is making the everyday life of workers and riggers easier and safer. It was great to see the IEC Boardwalk project team pick up the controls and get to grips with the operation quickly.”

To date, Roborigger has been utilised on site to support the piling works for orientating large piling casings in a site adjacent to Victoria Harbour.

“The IEC Boardwalk project is perfect as a pilot project due to the extensive lifting and marine operations on site under windy conditions,” , said Bob Yeung, Project Director of IEC Boardwalk. “I’m proud that our project is the first in Hong Kong to adopt this technology to ensure safe lifting operations and hope that other projects can see the future potential of this solution.”
