In Singapore, Leighton Asia’s Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) Phase 2 Contract T-09 project celebrates the key milestone of launching the third Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) by using the patented ‘Flying Launch’.
A first for Asia, Leighton Asia together with HOCHTIEF pioneer the use of a ‘Flying Launch’ structure to optimise TBM launching in terms of time, space and safety.
A total of three TBMs with a diameter of 7.56m are deployed to carry out the excavation works for the approximately 8km tunnel for used water. The innovative ‘Flying launch’ system pulled the TBMs into the ground using a steel pressure ring, tension bars and hydraulic jacks, which were re-used on each launch. The system successfully reduced the TBM launch time from 10 shifts to around 2.5 shifts.
Leighton Asia’s scope of works for this project also includes the delivery of shafts, hydraulics structures and other facilities associated with the sewerage conveyance system.
The collaboration between Leighton Asia and HOCHTIEF demonstrates the wealth of expertise within the Group to develop value-added, innovative solutions for our projects.
Watch the short video below on how Leighton Asia’s team in Singapore and HOCHTIEF’s team in Essen, Germany worked together to get the TBMs off to a better start.
